Glenmorangie Dornoch Review and Notes: What? Another boring limited edition? Shocking…

Glenmorangie distillery have been on a roll this last year, releasing 2 new special and limited editions in addition to their yearly private collection release (last being the Companta reviewed here) : The Taghta (reviewed here) and Dornoch which is under the limelight today.

Glenmorangie Dornoch is a release in honor of Dornoch Firth, a vast and picturesque sea estuary. To raise awareness for the conservation of the Dornoch Firth, Glenmorangie has partnered with the Marine Conservation Society to preserve this precious waterway and a percentage of the revenues from this bottle will go toward the Marine Conservation Society to help sustain the estuary.

Glenmorangie Dornoch itself is a no-age-statement single malt Scotch comprised of liquid matured in American oak barrels and lightly peated whisky further matured in ex-Amontillado Sherry casks and is available exclusively in Travel Retail shops.

Whisky Review and Tasting Notes – Glenmorangie Taghta

Not too long time ago, Glenmorangie ‘created’ a “crowd sourced” whisky. It means that everything important about it was selected and chosen (or at least heavily influenced) by the public who cared (and possible consumers). The whisky taste, name and label design – all of it went threw voting process and at the end, after a very long and somewhat tedious process (I admit I got tired of it in the middle of the process and I probably wasn’t alone in that feeling), we got this whisky: Glenmorangie Taghta.

Taghta (pronounced tuh-tah) is Scots Gaelic for ‘chosen’ and the whisky that was chosen was finished in ex-Manzanilla casks.

As generally I like Glenmorangie, I bought and shared a bottle with my friend Michael in the hope for another good addition to whisky shelf. Is it?

Whisky News: Glenmorangie Pride 1978, Kininvie 23 yo, Old Pulteney Clipper Commemorative Bottling

Another week full of new whiskies announcements. Glenmoranige release their ‘rarest’ whisky to date (and most expensive!), Old Pulteney (2nd week on the chart! ;-)) with Commemorative Bottling and Diageo releases a Kininvie 23 yo 2nd batch (FYI, first one was Taiwan only).

Soon (maybe even next week), we’ll have official release of Bowmore Devils Cask II (AKA Batch 2) and Glendronach Batch 10 single casks (already available for order from The Whisky Shop, (£66 for 2002 vintage up to £152 for 1990 vintage). Phew, quite a lot ah?

Glenmorangie Pride 1978

Glenmorangie has unveiled what it claims is its rarest, “most exquisite” and most expensive whisky to-date, called Glenmorangie Pride 1978.

Glenmorangie-Pride-1978The 34-year-old single malt, of which only 700 bottles will be available worldwide, initially started out as a 19-year-old vintage before being extra-matured in French Premier Grand Cru claret casks for an additional 15 years.

After laying down just five casks of the whisky, Dr Bill Lumsden, director of distilling and whisky creation at Glenmorangie, said this was the most the brand’s “most exquisite” edition to-date.

“The resulting liquid is a luxurious burnished copper with rich, decadent and delicious scents of chestnut, toffee and cherries,” he said.

“I believe this is my most exquisite expression yet, one that will be savoured by whisky enthusiasts across the globe.”

Artist Idris Khan has created a limited edition piece of artwork, entitled ‘Disappearing Casks’, to accompany each purchase of Glenmorangie Pride 1978.

“I am absolutely delighted to work with Glenmorangie,” said Khan. “When visiting the distillery in Tain I was immediately mesmerised.

“The vision of the casks has stayed with me and provided inspiration for ‘Disappearing Casks’. I was born the same year that the casks were laid down and it feels very fitting that I am helping to tell its story.”

Bottled at 47.4% abv Glenmorangie Pride 1978 carries an RRP of £3,400 and will be available from Glenmorangie’s online shop as well as from specialist retailers and department stores.

Kininvie 23yo Batch 2 Is Now at The Whisky Shop

Kininvie 23Kininvie is a unique single malt distillery founded on 6 copper stills nestled in the Conval hills of Dufftown, Speyside.

First opened in July 1990, it has taken three decades of quiet, patient and devoted care to get to this point . A treasured secret known until now by only a few, Kininvie is at peak perfection – and now the first house malt is ready for release in the UK.

The brand new Kininvie 23 year old has been made in small batches, every bottle will be individually numbered and housed in 35cl bottles. Each batch number and year of distillation will appear on the label. This scarce 1990 UK release contains malt whisky from the very first distillation, matured in a mix of American hogsheads (80%) and sherry casks (20%).

Official Tasting notes:

Nose: Rich and vibrant aroma with ripe, fleshy fruit notes overlaid with creamy vanilla toffee sweetness.  A more subtle floral, leafy summer blossom note develops over time.

Palate: Beautifully soft and mellow with a luxurious silky texture. The rich vanilla oakiness resulting from 23 years of maturation gives an incredible depth of flavour and sweetness. Woody spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves are layered with zesty citrus and candied orange peel.

Finish: Enduringly sweet.

Old Pulteney Clipper CommemorativeThis week Old Pulteney – The Maritime Malt – celebrates the completion of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2014 by the crew of brave men and women on board a yacht named after the iconic Single Malt Scotch Whisky. The race started eleven months ago and saw the Old Pulteney rose of winds carried proudly to France, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, Singapore, China, United States of America, Panama, Jamaica, Northern Ireland, The Netherlands and back to the starting point in London, UK. The brand’s involvement in this classic feat of sea adventuring is a natural continuation of the long and rich maritime heritage of the town of Wick on the Caithness Coast in the Northern Highlands of Scotland, where Pulteney Distillery was built in 1826 and where it produces its multi-award-winning Scotch whisky until this day.

The staff and management at Pulteney Distillery took the opportunity to thank all the crew members and the Skipper Partick van der Zijden for their tremendous effort and for representing Old Pulteney all around the world this past year. The Old Pulteney crew have shown rare determination and courage and successfully completed the race despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Margaret Mary Clarke, the Old Pulteney Global Brand Manager, said:

 “As a whisky built on its maritime history and connections, it has been an enormous thrill to be part of the Clipper 2013-14 Round the World Race and to have witnessed the ‘Old Pulteney’ speed from port to port over the past year.”



Old Pulteney Clipper Commemorative Bottling

To mark the occasion Old Pulteney will release a special commemorative bottling of its whisky. Old Pulteney Clipper will be made available in July 2014 at select retailers world-wide. The limited release will feature a Clipper Round the World Yacht Race -themed packaging and the whisky itself will be a classic expression of Old Pulteney, matured in both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. The whisky will be presented at its natural colour, non chill-filtered and at a premium strength of 46% ABV. Only 2,700 cases of this rare bottling will ever be released and the recommended retail price in the UK is £50.

The appearance of the whisky is that of polished gold. On the nose the sweetness of dried fruits and crispiness of green apples is accompanied by notes of fresh vanilla and white chocolate. On the palate waves of honey and orange zest, a rounded oaky structure and an unmistakable coastal note set this fresh and elegant Old Pulteney apart. The finish is smooth and long-lasting.

Maritime Malt

The heritage of Old Pulteney Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is closely interwoven with that of the port town of Wick. Once a thriving herring fishing port where as many as one thousand vessels could crowd the harbour in the fishing season, Wick was famously reported to produce ‘barrels of silver’ (salted herring) and ‘barrels of gold’ (single malt whisky). Set up to quench the thirst of a busy port, the distillery soon became recognised for producing one of the finest spirits in the world. And even though the fishing industry in Wick is well past its prime, traditional production methods, a wealth of experience and the coastal location which lends a distinctly maritime character to the whisky, keep Old Pulteney firmly in the whisky lover’s spotlight.

Whisky Review – Glenmorangie Companta

As they say: better late than never – I’ve finally found the time to write my notes on the latest expression in Glenmorangie Private Collection Series – The Glenmorangie Companta.


I won’t bother with all the details on this whisky, suffice to say it’s wine finished whisky and if you want more details, just head on to the excellent post by Billy Abbott on TWE blog here.

Whisky Review – Glenmorangie 10 Year Old Original

I’ve started single malt whiskies with a bang – going directly with peated Laphroaig Quarter Cask but immediately I wanted to have something from the other side of the scale to balance it out. As it happened, my sister in law traveled abroad and I quickly looked at our Duty Free shop selection and asked her to bring me a bottle of Glenmorangie 10.

So this one was my first Glenmorangie bottle and it served me faithfully until it was finished couple of weeks ago. Good thing I remembered to write down some tasting notes with the last dram 🙂 Continue reading

Whisky News – Diageo expands Clynelish and Glen Ord, Glenmorangie Companta

Some big whisky news this week – Diageo continue with their large £1billion expansions plan and Glenmorangie released the next installment in their limited edition series.

Glenmorangie has released its eagerly-awaited fifth annual limited edition single malt whisky: Companta.

Its predecessor, Ealanta, was recently named the world’s best dram by Jim Murray, one of the world’s leading whisky experts.

compantaCreated by wood management pioneer and three-time winner of Malt Advocate’s coveted Industry Leader of the Year award Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie Companta is the latest in the Private Edition range – a group of rare and intriguing single malts.

Glenmorangie Companta is Scots Gaelic for friendship and celebrates Glenmorangie and distinguished French vineyards’ shared pursuit of perfection.

Dr Bill Lumsden, Director of Distilling and Whisky Creation, said: “Having spent over 20 years travelling to some of France’s most renowned vineyards, I’ve had the opportunity to sample many rare and intriguing wines in search of the finest casks to complement the extra-maturation of our whisky.

“Some of my most memorable visits have been to Burgundy, where the dedication and attention to detail that goes into their craft never ceases to amaze me.

“The smaller vineyards of the region don’t seem to worry about yields, costs, or timings. They work tirelessly, simply to produce the very best wine. In the same spirit as Glenmorangie, they stop at nothing in the pursuit of perfection.

“This shared philosophy inspired me to create the ultimate tribute to my longstanding love for French vineyards and the friends that I’ve had the pleasure to make throughout my travels.”

On the nose, Companta exudes rich, “autumnal” scents of red berries and damp forest floors, with a hint of fragrant woodsmoke complementing notes of aromatic, nutty oak.

Upon tasting, a spicy palate redolent of cherries and stewed fruits is slowly revealed, as notes of sugared plums, blood orange and rose-hip syrup emerge alongside milk chocolate and brown sugar, leading into a mouth-coating finish.

Bottled at a strength of 46 per cent, and non chill-filtered for extra body and texture, Glenmorangie Companta is available from independent specialist retailers and department stores including Royal Mile Whiskies and the Whiski Rooms with an RSP of £69.99.

A refined balance between bold spice and rich, smooth sweetness, Companta is the result of a careful assemblage of Glenmorangie extra-matured in both renowned Burgundy Grand Cru Clos de Tart casks and sweet fortified wine casks from C?tes du Rh?ne.

Lumsden explained: “Selecting parcels of Glenmorangie which had been matured in traditional American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, I transferred the spirit into casks having previously contained one of my personal favourites – the full-bodied Grand Cru wine from Clos de Tart, one of the most celebrated vineyards in Burgundy.


Diageo, the world’s leading premium drinks business, has today announced plans for a £30million expansion of its Clynelish Distillery in Sutherland, in the North-East of Scotland.

In the latest major milestone in Diageo’s £1billion programme to increase Scotch whisky production, plans have been submitted to Highland Council for the major expansion of Diageo’s most northerly Scotch whisky distillery.

diageo-clynelish_261112_0400The Clynelish expansion will take the on-going capital investment by Diageo in the Highland Council region alone to almost £150million, including major expansions at Glen Ord and Teaninich Distilleries and plans to build a new distillery at Alness.


Keith Miller, Diageo Director of Distillation and Maturation, said:

“The plan to expand Clynelish Distillery is another major milestone in Diageo’s £1billion investment to increase Scotch whisky production capacity to help meet the future growth in global demand for our brands.

“Clynelish is a very special distillery, producing spirit which is highly prized for its quality and character and is an important part of our Scotch whisky blending inventory, so this is an important part of our investment programme.”

Clynelish Distillery produces single malt whisky unique in both taste and texture which is highly prized by Diageo’s master blenders for use in world-leading Scotch whisky brands such as Johnnie Walker. Clynelish is also a highly regarded as a single malt whisky in its own right. The distillery is also home to one of Diageo’s 12 distillery visitor centres, welcoming more than 5,000 visitors each year. Clynelish is near the Sutherland town of Brora.
Doubling production capacity

Under the plans submitted, Clynelish Distillery will see the installation of an additional mashtun, 10 new washbacks and six new copper stills. This adds to the 10 washbacks and six stills which the distillery currently has, and will effectively double the production capacity to nine million litres of alcohol per annum, whilst retaining the unique character and quality of the spirit. A bio-energy plant is also planned for the site to provide non-fossil fuel energy to power the distillery.

As part of the planning process Diageo will hold a community engagement session in February to share further details of the Clynelish proposals with the local community.

Diageo announced its £1billion Scotch whisky investment programme in June 2012. As well as the distillery expansions the company is also investing in new warehousing to store the additional spirit, with a major new bonded warehouse site being developed at Cluny in Fife.


diageo-new-stills-for-glen-ord_1601_0182_loresFollowing Diageo’s announcement earlier today (16 January) of the investment at Clynelish Distillery, Glen Ord is now seeing the delivery and installation of new stills as part of the £25 million expansion plan for the distillery, which is seeing its capacity doubled to over 10 million litres per annum. The 10 new washbacks and 6 new stills will be housed in existing buildings at the distillery.

In total these projects represent a capital investment of nearly £150 million across the Highland Council area.

This time, a trio of Glenmorangie – Nectar D’Or, Lasanta and Quinta Ruban. Those 3 are interesting species as all of them starts as 10 years old Glenmorangie and then finished in different casks for additional 2 years. so how are they?
