The Singleton of Glen Ord 18 Year Old Special Releases 2019

With the Corona virus raging around us since early 2020, it is sometimes hard to remember that we passed through seasons. From winter to spring with summer season just upon us in the Northern hemisphere.

I thought that for the weekend, it would be a great time to review a whisky befitting spring time (just before we move on to the summer) and weekend, something like Glen Ord 18 Year Old that was part of Diageo Special Releases 2019.

Glen Ord is one of the triumvirate distilleries Diageo uses for The Singleton brand along with Dufftown and Glendulan. Usually Glen Ord is reserved to The Singleton marketed to the Far East region (so we do not get it in Europe, Middle East and America), so it was nice to have the opportunity to check an official release from the distillery.

Cardhu 14 Year Old (Special Release 2019)

Since 2001 Diageo are showcasing their enormous portfolio of distilleries in their Special Releases series. In the coming weeks we’ll cover here a few of the 2019 releases, starting today with this Cardhu 14 Year Old.

We don’t get to see too many Cardhus out there. There are the staple 12 Year Old and the Gold Reserve but outside these it’s quite rare, especially Cask Strength offerings where the last tone was released back in 2013.

This 14 Year Old Cardhu was matured in Amontillado sherry casks, 4,872 bottles were produced and bottled at 55% and the art work for it and the entire series is magnificent!

Cardhu 14 Year Old (Special Release 2019) (55%, £120/€139)

Nose: Sour fruits with a touch of nuttiness, honey, sweet barley, caramel and toffee. Then a bowl of fruits – pears, peaches and apples with sweet berries sauce, After a few minutes it develops a more nutty profile with cinnamon, cashew and almonds and eventually becoming herbal. Continue reading

Cladach Blended Malt (Diageo Special Releases 2018) Review

After reviewing two blended malts from Compass Box let’s have a third blended malt review and one that has some high pedigree after being included in a high profile series. Yes, we’re talking about Cladach which is the blended malt that was included in Diageo Special Releases 2018 (2nd year in a row with a blended malt for Special Releases).

Cladach means shoreline/coastline and the whisky uses only single malts made at Diageo coastal distilleries: Inchgower, Clynelish, Talisker, Oban, Caol Ila and Lagavulin.

It was bottled at cask strength of 100 proof (57.1%) and was matured in an assortment of casks (first fill bourbon, refill, refill sherry butts).

Cladach Blended Malt (57.1%, £152/€134,99)

Nose: The nose here starts with gentle peat smoke and then slowly it develops into a pure coastal whisky with brine, sea breeze, salt, some wax, lemon, brioche, white pepper. Also show up: smoked fish and seafood, pears. Continue reading

No Brora and Port Ellen in Special Releases 2018 Announcement

This morning Diageo announced 9 out of 10 bottles of their Special Releases 2018. For the first time ever since the SP series was launched, there are no Port Ellen and Brora bottles in the list.

Instead we see four bottles destined to the regular consumers market. In addition to Lagavulin 12 CS and Caol Ila  15 Unpeated, we have a Cask Strength 8 Year Old Talisker and 14 Year Old Singleton.

The tenth bottle will be revealed later this year and the series bottles will probably be will during October 2018.

Diageo 2017 Special Releases Bottle Information

it seems like the information on Diageo Special Releases 2017 has started to trickle out as four new labels from Diageo distilleries has popped up in the TTB database and they aren’t of the more familiar brands in their portfolio:

  • Teaninich 17 Year Old (200th Anniversary) – 55.9%
  • Port Dundas 52 Year Old – 46.6%, 752 bottles
  • Glen Elgin 18 Year Old – 54.8%, 5352 bottles
  • Blair Athol 23 Year Old – 58.4%, 5514 bottles

Update (24/4/2017) – WhiskyExperts.net has published information on more bottles in the SP17 release:

  • Brora 1982 34 Year Old – 51.9%, 3000 bottles
  • Port Ellen 1979 37 Year Old – 51%, 2988 bottles

Here are the labels from the TTB database:

Linkwood 37, Glenkinchie 24, Cambus 40 and Mannochmore 25 added to Diageo Special Releases 2016

We’ve already posted information on the forthcoming Diageo Special Releases 2016 with Port Ellen 37 and Brora 38 in the limelight. In the last few years, we came to expect those releases (along with the Caol Ila and Lagavulin) but we always have a supporting cast from other distilleries in Diageo Portfolio and it seems like we have four new addition to the Special Releases 2016 and the current list is as the following:

  • Lagavulin 12 Year Old 2016 – 57.7%
  • Caol Ila 15 Year Old Unpeated – 61.5%
  • Port Ellen 1978 37 Year Old – 55.2%, 2940 bottles
  • Brora 38 Year Old – 48.6%, 2984 bottles
  • Auchroisk 25 Year Old – 51.2%, 3954 bottles
  • Linkwood 37 Year Old – 50.3%, 6114 bottles
  • Cambus 40 Year Old – 52.7%, 1812 bottles
  • Glenkinchie 24 Year Old – 57.2%, 5928 bottles
  • Mannochmore 25 Year Old – 53.4%, 3954 bottles

Brora 38, Port Ellen 37 and others in the Diageo 2016 Special Releases

On the heels of Feis Ile 2016, some labels of the forthcoming 2016 edition of Diageo Special Releases has shown up at the federal TTB database (labels are at the bottom of the post) earlier today.

At the moment we can quite safely assume (like 99.999%) those five release will be out coming October:

  • Lagavulin 12 Year Old 2016 – 57.7%
  • Caol Ila 15 Year Old Unpeated – 61.5%
  • Port Ellen 1978 37 Year Old – 55.2%, 2940 bottles
  • Brora 38 Year Old – 48.6%, 2984 bottles
  • Auchroisk 25 Year Old – 51.2%, 3954 bottles

We can see that the annual releases of Lagavulin 12, Caol Ila Unpeated, Brora & Port Ellen live on for another year. After 16 years, we still keep asking ourselves: just how many casks are left and how long can they sustain this series of Brora and Port Ellen?

I wonder if they have another Lagavulin coming up for SR 2016, after all it’s the 200th anniversary of the distillery but we’ll have to wait a bit more to get an answer on this question.

Whisky News – Diageo expands Clynelish and Glen Ord, Glenmorangie Companta

Some big whisky news this week – Diageo continue with their large £1billion expansions plan and Glenmorangie released the next installment in their limited edition series.

Glenmorangie has released its eagerly-awaited fifth annual limited edition single malt whisky: Companta.

Its predecessor, Ealanta, was recently named the world’s best dram by Jim Murray, one of the world’s leading whisky experts.

compantaCreated by wood management pioneer and three-time winner of Malt Advocate’s coveted Industry Leader of the Year award Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie Companta is the latest in the Private Edition range – a group of rare and intriguing single malts.

Glenmorangie Companta is Scots Gaelic for friendship and celebrates Glenmorangie and distinguished French vineyards’ shared pursuit of perfection.

Dr Bill Lumsden, Director of Distilling and Whisky Creation, said: “Having spent over 20 years travelling to some of France’s most renowned vineyards, I’ve had the opportunity to sample many rare and intriguing wines in search of the finest casks to complement the extra-maturation of our whisky.

“Some of my most memorable visits have been to Burgundy, where the dedication and attention to detail that goes into their craft never ceases to amaze me.

“The smaller vineyards of the region don’t seem to worry about yields, costs, or timings. They work tirelessly, simply to produce the very best wine. In the same spirit as Glenmorangie, they stop at nothing in the pursuit of perfection.

“This shared philosophy inspired me to create the ultimate tribute to my longstanding love for French vineyards and the friends that I’ve had the pleasure to make throughout my travels.”

On the nose, Companta exudes rich, “autumnal” scents of red berries and damp forest floors, with a hint of fragrant woodsmoke complementing notes of aromatic, nutty oak.

Upon tasting, a spicy palate redolent of cherries and stewed fruits is slowly revealed, as notes of sugared plums, blood orange and rose-hip syrup emerge alongside milk chocolate and brown sugar, leading into a mouth-coating finish.

Bottled at a strength of 46 per cent, and non chill-filtered for extra body and texture, Glenmorangie Companta is available from independent specialist retailers and department stores including Royal Mile Whiskies and the Whiski Rooms with an RSP of £69.99.

A refined balance between bold spice and rich, smooth sweetness, Companta is the result of a careful assemblage of Glenmorangie extra-matured in both renowned Burgundy Grand Cru Clos de Tart casks and sweet fortified wine casks from C?tes du Rh?ne.

Lumsden explained: “Selecting parcels of Glenmorangie which had been matured in traditional American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, I transferred the spirit into casks having previously contained one of my personal favourites – the full-bodied Grand Cru wine from Clos de Tart, one of the most celebrated vineyards in Burgundy.

NEW MILESTONE IN DIAGEO SCOTCH INVESTMENT WITH PLAN FOR CLYNELISH DISTILLERY EXPANSION

Diageo, the world’s leading premium drinks business, has today announced plans for a £30million expansion of its Clynelish Distillery in Sutherland, in the North-East of Scotland.

In the latest major milestone in Diageo’s £1billion programme to increase Scotch whisky production, plans have been submitted to Highland Council for the major expansion of Diageo’s most northerly Scotch whisky distillery.
Clynelish Distillery

diageo-clynelish_261112_0400The Clynelish expansion will take the on-going capital investment by Diageo in the Highland Council region alone to almost £150million, including major expansions at Glen Ord and Teaninich Distilleries and plans to build a new distillery at Alness.

Keith Miller, Diageo Director of Distillation and Maturation, said:

“The plan to expand Clynelish Distillery is another major milestone in Diageo’s £1billion investment to increase Scotch whisky production capacity to help meet the future growth in global demand for our brands.

“Clynelish is a very special distillery, producing spirit which is highly prized for its quality and character and is an important part of our Scotch whisky blending inventory, so this is an important part of our investment programme.”

Clynelish Distillery produces single malt whisky unique in both taste and texture which is highly prized by Diageo’s master blenders for use in world-leading Scotch whisky brands such as Johnnie Walker. Clynelish is also a highly regarded as a single malt whisky in its own right. The distillery is also home to one of Diageo’s 12 distillery visitor centres, welcoming more than 5,000 visitors each year. Clynelish is near the Sutherland town of Brora.
Doubling production capacity

Under the plans submitted, Clynelish Distillery will see the installation of an additional mashtun, 10 new washbacks and six new copper stills. This adds to the 10 washbacks and six stills which the distillery currently has, and will effectively double the production capacity to nine million litres of alcohol per annum, whilst retaining the unique character and quality of the spirit. A bio-energy plant is also planned for the site to provide non-fossil fuel energy to power the distillery.

As part of the planning process Diageo will hold a community engagement session in February to share further details of the Clynelish proposals with the local community.

Diageo announced its £1billion Scotch whisky investment programme in June 2012. As well as the distillery expansions the company is also investing in new warehousing to store the additional spirit, with a major new bonded warehouse site being developed at Cluny in Fife.

GLEN ORD DISTILLERY GETS ITS NEW STILLS

diageo-new-stills-for-glen-ord_1601_0182_loresFollowing Diageo’s announcement earlier today (16 January) of the investment at Clynelish Distillery, Glen Ord is now seeing the delivery and installation of new stills as part of the £25 million expansion plan for the distillery, which is seeing its capacity doubled to over 10 million litres per annum. The 10 new washbacks and 6 new stills will be housed in existing buildings at the distillery.

diageo-new-stills-for-glen-ord_1601_0178_loresDiageo is also doubling the capacity at the Teaninich Distillery in Alness and is progressing plans to build a new malt whisky distillery and renewable energy plant on land adjacent to Teaninich.

In total these projects represent a capital investment of nearly £150 million across the Highland Council area.
